The New Student Conference is split into two days. During Day 1, you and your student will attend sessions related to the resources, services, and support systems available to your student at Texas A&M University. All students will spend Day 2 with their academic School or College. As a family member, you may or may not be able to participate in Day 2 alongside your student. If you are unsure about your participation options, refer to the communication your student will receive from their academic unit leading up to their New Student Conference.
All students on Day 2 of their New Student Conference will register for classes. We know registering for classes can be a stressful experience so below are some general information related to course registration.
Much of the information below is covered in your student’s Online Orientation. However, it is a best practice to ensure your student has reviewed, watched, and taken notes on the material so they are best prepared for the New Student Conference.
- Have your student confirm their registration readiness status. They can do this through howdy.tamu.edu by searching for “Registration Readiness” in the search bar. From there, confirm their selected semester is the semester they will be starting at Texas A&M University. Any items preventing your student from registering for classes will be shown in red, whereas green will indicate they have completed that task. Your student will want to ensure all items are green before their New Student Conference, or at least before Day 2. We will have a help desk at the New Student Conference on Day 1 where questions and assistance about holds may be provided.
- We recommend all students review their degree plan online before the New Student Conference and make a list of questions to discuss with their advisor before their advising session. There’s a full list of degree and program information through the Undergraduate Catalog.
- At 2:00 p.m. during Day 2 of the New Student Conference, your student will utilize “Aggie Schedule Builder” to register for classes. While they will not be able to register for classes before 2:00 p.m., your student can start to look at courses offered and look at class times, professors, etc. through Aggie Schedule Builder beforehand. They do this by going to howdy.tamu.edu, and searching for “Aggie Schedule Builder” in the search bar. Make sure your student has selected the appropriate term and campus to view their courses.
As a note: A student who is enrolled in 12 or more credit hours is considered “Full-Time”, whereas a student registered in less than 12 credit hours may be considered part-time. If your student is receiving financial aid or scholarships, it is essential your student maintains their eligibility, which is often tied to their credit hours. For more information about maintaining eligibility, go to the Aggie One Stop website.
If you have any questions related to the above information, your student’s academic unit will be the best to answer specific questions about the registration process within your student’s selected major. However, please reach out to familyprograms@tamu.edu if you need any general assistance.
