One of Texas A&M's most unique traditions, The Big Event, is a celebration of the university's core value of selfless service. As the largest one-day student-run service project in the nation, it exemplifies the Aggie spirit of giving back to the community.

A Tradition Born from Service

The origins of The Big Event date back to 1982, when six Aggies, led by founder Joe Nussbaum, volunteered to clean up a local cemetery. What began as a small act of kindness has blossomed into a monumental event that occurs every spring, with thousands of Aggie students coming together to show their appreciation for the surrounding community. Service projects range from yard work and window washing to painting and other helpful tasks.

Over the years, The Big Event has expanded beyond Texas A&M, inspiring more than 100 additional universities across the nation to initiate similar events in their communities. In 2014, Aggies studying abroad took the initiative to create the first international Big Event, completing projects in countries like Spain, Italy, and Germany.

Celebrating 40 Years of Impact

The Big Event celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2022, and its impact continues to resonate within the Bryan-College Station community. Each year, students wake up early, ready to spend the day giving back and building connections across the Brazos Valley. The mission remains clear: to express gratitude for the unwavering support and generosity the community has provided to Texas A&M over the years.

Get Involved

The Big Event is an incredible opportunity for your student to get involved—whether by volunteering their time or by joining the executive student team responsible for coordinating this meaningful event. Participating not only fosters a sense of community but also allows students to create lasting memories and connections.
