As mid-semester approaches, many students experience heightened stress, leading to Student Life seeing an increase in cases related to Q-drops, withdrawals, and other stress-related issues. To help you support your student during this challenging time, we’ve compiled key information on these topics.
Increase in Q-Drop and Withdrawal Considerations
As they approach the middle of the semester and see their grades start to fill in, some students may be considering Q-dropping a class.
- Understanding Q-Drops:
- A “Q-drop” allows a student to drop a course without it affecting their GPA. If a student is struggling in class and does not believe they can improve their grade, they have until November 13 to use a Q-drop.
- Students have four Q-drops available during their undergraduate degree at Texas A&M. If a student is planning to use more than two Q-drops in one semester, they might need to consider withdrawing for the semester.
- Implications of Withdrawing:
- Withdrawing from the fall semester does not mean the student is no longer a Texas A&M student. Students can still register for the spring semester, provided they address any holds. Like a Q-drop, withdrawing does not affect the student’s GPA.
Students should seek guidance from their academic advisor before using a Q-drop or starting the withdrawal process.
Addressing Stress, Lack of Sleep, and Anxiety
Other common issues Student Life sees during this time are increases in students struggling with stress, lack of sleep, and anxiety. If your student is exhibiting any of these signals, encourage them to prioritize sleep and maintain healthy habits such as physical exercise and proper nutrition. The resources below are only some of the many that are available on campus:
- The Academic Success Center offers tutoring, supplemental instruction, academic coaching, and workshops to help students excel academically.
- The Math Learning Center provides in-person tutoring, review sessions, and online resources to support students in math and statistics courses.
- University Health Services offers comprehensive medical care, counseling services, and health education programs to promote student well-being.
- Academic advisors assist with course selection, degree planning, and connecting students to additional academic support resources.
- Professors are available during office hours to help with course material, assignments, and provide guidance on academic and career interests.
- The Student Recreation Center offers fitness classes, sports facilities, and personal training to help students stay active and healthy.
- Student Life’s Student Assistance Services staff provides one-on-one appointments to discuss emergency aid, absence notifications, and resource referrals to support students facing personal or academic challenges.
Reassure your student that these struggles are common amongst their peers and that they are not alone in their experience.
